FULL TIME PUBLIC WORKS/CITY UTILITIES EMPLOYEE – JOB OPENING
JOB SUMMARY:
Performs the daily activities and maintenance of the City of Randolph Public Works Department’s Garbage, Recycling, Water, Sewer, Streets, Auditorium, Cemetery and Parks. Ensures all work is conducted according to the City of Randolph department policies, codes, and standards of quality and safety in addition to state and federal regulations and laws. Must be able to exercise effective judgment in work objectives and determine methods to meet objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Champions safety precautions and occupational hazards in the use of equipment, work methods, and practices. Ensures safety and professional work standards are met
- Performs monthly water and electric meters reads for accurate utility billing
- Maintains productivity without sacrificing quality and safety standards of all city properties and maintenance including: residential & commercial garbage removal on Tuesdays and Fridays, monthly emptying of recycling materials
- Understands seasonal changes bring different work responsibilities and maintenance of required equipment. Warmer weather means mowing, watering, and weed control of all City owned properties: Parks, Auditorium, Cemetery, flowerpots, walking trail, Hwy 20 roadside ditches, and vacant lots. Colder weather means winterization, snow removal, and deicing of streets and sidewalks of city owned properties
- Cleans auditorium after events and cleaning & inspecting of bathrooms at parks and auditorium
- Applies cold patch for road maintenance and cement for curb repair and city owned vacant lots
- Services water utility customers: meter replacements, new meter installations, water line repairs and new installations. Assists with monthly water and sewer samples for state regulations.
- Keeps accurate inventory of maintenance materials and supplies
- Completes daily, weekly, monthly duties as assigned and communicates with office staff & Public Works Supervisor about issues and ideas to improve processes
- Follows standard operating procedures and maintenance operations
- Trains and mentors assigned seasonal employees on work methods, use of tools, and equipment
- Performs a variety of crew work including the operation motorized equipment & hand tools; may operate some equipment during training or emergency situations
- Knowledge of or the ability to learn how to operate line locators, leaking equipment, water and wastewater treatment equipment, locate plots at cemetery, and other related equipment.
- Operates a computer and applicable software, including Microsoft Office
- Establish, maintain, and foster effective working relationships with city employees, Mayor, City Council member, boards, and the greater Randolph Community
- Other duties assigned as needed
SUPERVISION & TEAMWORK:
- Utilities Employee reports to Public Works Supervisor. Rotates on a monthly schedule of daily rounds and on call weekends.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Be 18 or older and have a valid high school diploma or GED
- Possess valid operator license (driver’s license)
- Complete and pass pre-employment physical & drug screen
- Pass background check
- POSSESSION OF OR ABILITY TO ACQUIRE WITHIN 6-12 MONTHS:
- Valid Nebraska Grade IV Water Operator Certificate
- Valid Nebraska Class 1 Waste Water Treatment Facility Operator
- Valid Nebraska Class B Commercial Driver’s License
SKILLS:
- Ability to collaborate on a team and also work independently
- Interacts and communicates effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to accurate convey message to other team members from Public Works Supervisor
- Accountability and good steward of City owned equipment that may be assigned as needed
- Knowledge of or ability to learn:
- All federal, state, and local regulations governing potable water and wastewater treatment.
- Operate Public Works Department vehicles and equipment
- Critical thinking, prioritizing, and decision making when multiple projects are to be completed
EMPLOYMENT STATUS
The Utilities Employee will be an hourly full-time regular employee of the City of Randolph. Starting wage depending on experience. Position is eligible for overtime pay and a comprehensive compensation package including Dental, Vision, & Health Benefits, retirement, vacation, sick, holiday pay, wellness program, and mobile reimbursement stipend.
RESIDENCY
The Utilities Employee must live within 30 miles of Randolph, NE and relocate to Randolph, NE area within first year of employment.
